Tech Tidbits

From time to time we run across anomalies and record them here for posterity and your enjoyment or use.

On PC Computers with autoshutdown, you may find the on/off switch doesn't seem to work.  Just hold it down for a full 10 seconds.

On Mac computers that chime but don't go through startup the problem is likely a corrupt extension.  Start up with the shift key down, this will bypass the extensions.  Now figure out the rogue extension by deduction, ie. trial and error.  There are ways to speed up the process using a binary tree.

On Windows98 PC's  the shut down may be erratic.  This could be caused by a bug in Windows98 Second Edition, or it could be that your modem is still trying to connect somewhere.  Be sure you've exited programs that use your modem.  Microsoft has posted a patch, to get it click here shutdown supplement

Weird little bug.  Dr. Solomon version 7.4 will sometimes reset your mail settings in Outlook Express.  It puts in the wrong ip address for the mail server.  Solution disable Dr. Solomon, put the correct address in, update Dr. Solomon.

Wscript KakWorm virus is ugly.  It will come with an Outlook Express email and then manifest itself on your system by claiming that ActiveX portions of your email may present a security risk.  For a fix, go to Norton Anti Virus Center.and download  http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/.  You should also stop into Educomp and pick up the new Norton Anti Virus 2001 program.
